This infusion is applied by touch to a creature’s shadow, which is then torn free from its owner and animated in service to the concoctor (see the ACKS II Monstrous Manual for the shadow’s statistics).

The concoctor can give verbal orders to the shadow when it arrives and thereafter as an action in lieu of moving anytime the shadow is in line of sight. Orders can be given in any language the caster speaks. The summoned shadow will obey the caster’s orders. However, shadows are hateful creatures inimical to all life, and will always attempt to twist the meaning of their orders to wreak as much evil as possible. In the absence of any orders, the awakened shadow will act on its own initiative to hunt down and kill the creature it was drawn from. Should it succeed in doing so, it is instantly freed from the concoctor’s service. Otherwise, the effect lasts up to 1 week, after which the shadow dissipates and reappears as a normal shadow on the creature from whence it was spawned.
