This spell sends the caster’s mind to a distant plane of existence, where he can receive advice and/or information from a power that dwells therein, such as an angel, demon, demigod, elemental, or other eldritch being. When the spell is cast, the caster chooses which plane he wishes to contact. Each type of plane has different entities of greater or lesser availability, reliability, and danger. The types of planes are:
Mythic: The caster contacts entities native to one of the mythic planes orbiting Eberron: Daanvi, the Perfect Order; Dolurrh, the Realm of the Dead; Irian, the Eternal Dawn; or Thelanis, the Faerie Court. These entities are relatively safe to contact and are relatively responsive and truthful.
Elemental: The caster contacts a being of raw elemental power from Fernia, the Sea of Flame; Lamannia, the Twilight Forest, Risia, the Plane of Ice; or Syriana, the Azure Sky. Elemental beings are generally responsive and very truthful, but their alien thought patterns pose a risk to the caster’s soul.
Dreaded: The caster contacts one of the dreaded entities that dwell in a more dangerous plane orbiting Eberron, such as Dal Quor, the Region of Dreams; Kythri, the Churning Chaos; Mabar, the Endless Night, or Shavarath, the Eternal Battleground. Dreaded beings are eager to entice the ambitious and powerful and are highly responsive, but not particularly truthful. Because they can gain from interaction with mortals, they make themselves relatively safe to contact.
Siberys: The caster contacts a lawful entity native to the Ring of Siberys. Though benevolent, empyrean beings tend to concern themselves with the high patterns of providence and rarely respond to the individual petitions of mortals, but they are relatively safe to contact.
Outer Darkness: The caster contacts one of the demonic forces that dwell within Khyber or an eldritch being from Xoriat, the Realm of Madness. The horrors of the Outer Darkness are always watching and waiting to speak with those who dare contact them, and when they speak, they offer truth, no matter how terrible it might be. The spiritual risk of contacting the Outer Darkness is incredibly high and only the most foolish and desperate mages attempt it.
The caster may ask one question per round, for up to one round per two caster levels. For each question, the Judge rolls on the adjoining table to see if the power responds to the question and then rolls again to see if the power answers truthfully. Any response is given in the same round as the question is asked in a language the caster understands. The caster may ask the same question repeatedly if desired. The caster must concentrate on maintaining the spell while asking questions but need not continue if he has learned what he wishes. Some questions reduce his number of available questions by more than one.
When contacting another sphere, the following types of questions can be asked:
-
The command word for a magic item. The magic item must be either in the caster’s possession or be a unique named item.
-
The location of a supreme place of power related to the sphere contacted. The caster will learn the direction and approximate distance to the place of power as well as a very short description of that location.
-
The location of a very rare or legendary magic item. The caster will learn the direction and approximate distance to the item as well as a very short description of that location.
-
The formula for an arcane spell. Asking this question reduces the number of available questions left by the spell’s level.
-
The formula for a construct or magic item. Asking this question reduces the number of available questions left by the magic item’s base cost / 20,000gp.
-
The true name of a cacodemon he would like to summon. Asking this question reduces the number of available questions left by the cacodemon’s HD / 3.
The Judge can permit other types of questions at his discretion. Immediately after asking each question, the caster must make a Death saving throw, applying the modifier shown on the adjoining table, to see if he suffers spiritual harm from the contact. If the save succeeds, the caster’s soul remains intact. If the save fails, the caster must roll on the Tampering with Mortality table (apply only the caster’s WIL modifier) for the alignment shown on the table at left and suffer whatever side effect results. The caster can continue to ask questions after suffering a side effect, if he wishes to risk additional side effects.
