The Shadowmount Forest is a temperate woodland of lush growth in the northern Borderlands, and the main source of lumber for Vedycaer, Atur, and the smaller settlements around it. A ring of ruined watchtowers around its edges marks where Caernathi patrollers once held the treeline. Like much of the land, the forest has crept and shifted since the Year of Trembling, and it is thick with undiscovered ruins from the age before. Deep scars run through the trees where, legend says, the old Lightning Rail once carried nobles across the continent in a matter of days.

The forest is far from empty. Bands of Lhazaaran elves, human bandits, and brigands move through it; boars and stranger beasts range the undergrowth; and scattered human villages scratch out a living beneath the canopy. A deep chasm is rumored to split the forest’s heart.

Rumors

  • A hidden spring somewhere in the wood is said to wash away the lingering marks left on those who have tampered with death.
  • Travelers speak of unicorns, of great spiders (attercops), of pygmies, and of worse things in the deep wood.
