The Stranger

Sovereign of Chaos and Change.

The Stranger is the Sovereign of all that refuses to be fixed. The runaway, the exile, the disowned, any who seek to change their lot, he considers his flock. He fears not Chaos — just another word for change, spoken by the fearful and dull.

His clergy are hard to find and harder to keep. They leave no trace of their passage and find hidden ways through country none have mapped. When they cannot evade, they change be it a wolf into a rabbit or their own face and voice. The deepest of them think nothing of rearranging their form.

Traditions that teach him: the Gnomish Iconologist, and the Antiquarian.

The Stranger has no fixed holy day. His faithful worship when they least expect to.

Strictures

The Stranger’s traditions have many strictures. Find yours below.

Gnomish Iconologist

  • A follower of the Stranger must wear their clothing out of place in some way — a button fastened askew, an odd earring or a mismatched pair, a single painted nail — and never in the same way for two consecutive days. She must not pass a day unchanged.
  • A follower of the Stranger owes no rite on any day of the week. She must make her offering of prayer the first time in each week that something takes her genuinely by surprise, and the offering takes at least one hour (6 turns). A week that passes with no surprise is a failure, and no prayer will mend it.
  • What she was in spring, he is not in summer. A follower of the Stranger must keep no name and no trade longer than a season, nor may her repertoire pass from season to season unchanged.

Antiquarian

An antiquarian of the Stranger abides every stricture listed for the Gnomish Iconologist above, and further:

  • A follower of the Stranger must break any habit another has come to expect of them. If it be said “she always does thus”, and be true, he must never do thus again.

Change and Chaos

Surprise is always to be sought, not to be arranged. The Stranger’s acolytes set out each day to discover something new. They do not hire others to jump out and scare them.
