Moonspeaker Boons
This page is still in progress.
At each level, the Moonspeaker chooses one of Eberron’s moons to study, and receives a boon (twice at 7th level). At 1st to 4th level, he receives the chosen moon’s minor boon; at 5th to 8th, the major boon, and from 9th to 12th, the supreme boon. He may not select any moon a second time; thus by 12th level he will have received one boon from each of the 13 moons. The moons and their boons are outlined below.
Aryth, the Gateway
Minor Boon: Aryth is connected to the plane of Dolurrh, the Realm of the Dead. The character with this boon gains the ability to rebuke undead as a cleric of one half his class level. When the character casts spells that require a Death or Paralysis saving throw, the target suffers a -1 penalty and the character counts as one class level higher than his actual level of experience. His eligibility to research death and protection magic is determined as if he were one caster level higher than actual. He gains a +1 bonus on magic research throws and increases his research rate by 5% when researching death or protection magic.
Major Boon: Aryth is said to be associated with the Dragon House of Aurien and its Mark of Passage. The character with this boon can cast safe travels once per day with a casting time of 1 turn. He need not have the spell in their repertoire nor expend a spell slot.
Supreme Boon: Children of Aryth are said to be sensitive to manifest zones. The moonspeaker’s home or sanctum becomes a minor place of power, tied to a plane of his choice. The place of power will encompass an area up to 9,000 square feet in size. If the moonspeaker’s sanctum is already located within a place of power, the place is increased by one rank of power (from minor to major or major to supreme). If the plane is associated to one or more elements, the moonspeaker enjoys perpetual energy invulnerability to the damage type associated with one of those elements while he is within it; otherwise he receives a benefit of similar potency at the Judge’s discretion.
Barrakas, the Lantern
Minor Boon: Children of Barrakas are known for noticing and understanding that which is already apparent. The character can cast illumination once per 8 hours. He need not have the spell in their repertoire nor expend a spell slot.
Major Boon: Barrakas is connected to the plane of Irian, the Eternal Day. His connection with its positive energy allows the character to spiritually rejuvenate those who are suffering from the enervated condition. By spending his day tending an enervated creature, the moonspeaker grants that creature a +1 bonus to their saving throws to end the condition. If his patient makes the third successful save in a row to end the condition while under his care, the creature may re-roll its maximum hit points using its current Hit Dice, keeping the new result if it is higher than their current (enervated) maximum.
Supreme Boon: Barrakas is said to be associated with the Dragon House of Tharashk and its Mark of Finding. A moonspeaker with this Supreme Boon can cast locate distant object once per month, with a casting time of 1 turn. He need not have the spell in their repertoire nor expend a spell slot.
Crya, the Mystery
Minor Boon: Crya is said to be associated with the Dragon House of Vol, and their Mark of Death. The character with this boon can control undead as a Chaotic cleric of one half his class level (rounded down). If the character casts death spells, his targets suffer a -2 penalty on their saving throws. When the character casts death or necromancy spells (such as animate undead), the spell effects are calculated as if he were two class levels higher than his actual level of experience. His eligibility to research death or necromancy magic is determined as if he were two caster levels higher than actual. He gains a +2 bonus on magic research throws and increases his research rate by 10% when researching death or necromancy magic. Secrets of the Dark Arts can stack with the Black Lore of Mabar proficiency, such that the character can control undead as a cleric of two-thirds his class level (rounded up), and his death and necromancy spells and research are calculated as if he were three (rather than two) caster levels higher than his actual caster level.
Major Boon: Children of Crya are said to be otherworldly, creepy, and unnerving, and one cannot trust ones own memory of them. The character gains a +1 bonus to reaction rolls when attempting to intimidate others. If this results in a total of 12+ after all modifiers, the targets become overawed as usual, but when the effect wears off, they forget all memory of what actions they took while so influenced, as well as the one minute prior to having been so affected. Twisted versions of the memory begin to appear in the following days and weeks in the dreams and nightmares of the affected creatures.
Supreme Boon: Crya is connected to the plane of Dal Quor, the Region of Dreams. The character’s enchantments and illusions endure while his memory endures. He can maintain twice the number of perpetual enchantments and illusions of each level. In addition, such perpetual spells he casts do not automatically expire with his death. Instead they are sustained until the living memory of the moonspeaker dies out. The moonspeaker is considered to be in living memory for as long as his sanctum is still intact and used by moonspeakers in an unbroken chain of apprentices in succession from him, or until 225 years has passed, whichever is longer. The effects can still be dispelled normally.
Dravago, the Herder’s Moon
Minor Boon: Dravago is said to be associated with the Dragon House of Vitalia, and its Mark of Handling. The moonspeaker with this boon is a friend of birds and beasts, and can identify plants and fauna with a proficiency throw of 11+. He can understand the vocalizations and body language of birds and beasts, enabling her to understand any simple messages the animals might be communicating (such as “danger is nearby, be alert,” “you’re unfamiliar and strange,” or “do not come closer, we are guarding our den!”). Because of his innate understanding of the language of beasts, the moonspeaker also counts as proficient for purposes of handling trained animals in their roles such as droving or shepherding. He gains +2 to all reaction rolls when encountering normal animals and can take animals as henchmen. He can train and handle animal henchmen to perform tricks or serve a particular role without having to separately possess Animal Training. If the moonspeaker also has the Beast Friendship proficiency, he can identify plants and fauna with a throw of 7+ and can take one more henchman than his Charisma would otherwise permit, as long as at least one is an animal. (The bonus to reaction rolls does not increase.)
Major Boon: Dravago is connected to plane of Risia, the Plain of Ice. The moonspeaker can cast ice sheet once per day. He need not have the spell in their repertoire nor expend a spell slot.
Supreme Boon: Children of Dravago are said to be aloof by nature, but also to herd others from a distance. By spending one turn (10 minutes) in solitary and naked contemplation, the moonspeaker with this boon can create a duplicate body for himself and share his soul across them. (Clothing and equipment are not duplicated.) Each of his two bodies thereafter function as an independent character under control of the player. Each body has its own hit points (which are physical) but the two bodies share spell slots (which are spiritual). Physical effects only harm the body they target, but mental effects (such as charm, feeblemind, or magic jar) affect the soul and hence both bodies. The effect ends at the next sunrise or sunset, or if one of the bodies is destroyed. When the effect end, the moonspeaker’s soul simply returns to the surviving body (or the body of his choice, if both are alive); the soulless body dissolves into nothing. Use of this boon is taxing and it cannot be used more than once per week.
Eyre, the Anvil
Minor Boon: Eyre is said to be associated with the Dragon House of Cannith, and its Mark of Making. A moonspeaker with this boon gains one rank of Magical Engineering as a bonus proficiency.
Major Boon: Children of Eyre are said to be pragmatic and solid thinkers. The moonspeaker with this boon gains a +3 bonus to saving throws versus enchantments and illusions.
Supreme Boon: Eyre is connected to the Plane of Fernia, the Sea of Flame. When the character casts elemental spells of any type, the spell effects are calculated as if he were two caster levels higher than his actual caster level. If the moonspeaker also has Elementalism proficiency, the spell effects of spells using that element are calculated as if he were three, rather than two, caster levels higher than his actual caster level.
Lharvion, the Eye
Minor Boon: Lharvion is connected to the plane of Xoriat, the Realm of Madness. By drawing on its power, the moonspeaker with this boon can attempt to overcast spells beyond their normal daily limits. The first overcasting attempt each day requires a throw of 6+, and each subsequent attempt increases the target number by 5. A natural 20 always succeeds, and the character may take double the normal casting time for a +2 bonus on the throw. A failed attempt results in a divine transgression, to be chosen or rolled by the Judge.
Major Boon: Lharvion is said to be associated to the Dragon House of Medani, and its Mark of Detection. The moonspeaker with this boon has the gift of second sight, and may see naturally or magically invisible creatures within 60’. Such creatures are aware that he can see them, and may be attracted to him as a result. This doesn’t allow the character any special ability to see in darkness or notice hidden creatures.
Supreme Boon: Children of Lharvion are said to have uncanny insights into workings of the universe. The moonspeaker with this boon has learned to decipher the secrets of the universe written in the structure of the heavens. He can meet his daily study requirements for studious spellcasting without physical access to his spell books simply by studying the night sky. He can use the visible heavens as a library for purposes of magical research. The astrographic library has a value of 10,000gp per rank of Knowledge (astrology) the moonspeaker has learned, and can substitute for or add to the value of a physical library. When performing magic experimentation, he can add his ranks in Knowledge (astrology) to his throw for the purposes of determining whether he has achieved a breakthrough. If he has four ranks in Knowledge (astrology), he gains one additional experimental advantage.
Nymm, the Crown
Minor Boon: Nymm is connected to the plane of Daanvi, the Perfect Order. Once per day, the moonspeaker with this boon can invoke Daanvi’s rhythm when they would make any attack throw, saving throw, or proficiency throw, and instead treat the result as if they had rolled a “10” on the die.
Major Boon: Nymm is said to be associated with the lost Dragon House of Ghallanda, and its Mark of Hospitality. So long as the moonspeaker with this boon gives no direct offense during an encounter with sapient creatures, they must make a saving throw in order to attack him (as the spell sanctuary). Note that if the encounter occurs in the other creatures’ habitat, he may already be giving offense when they encounter begins; this ability will not function if he fails to adequately address this before hostility begins!
Supreme Boon: Children of Nymm are said to be charismatic orators. The moonspeaker with this boon has learned the words of command and obedience. Any creatures summoned by the character will obey him to the best of their ability rather than seek to pervert his intention. Any creatures he conjures will depart without harming him if his concentration is broken.
Olarune, the Sentinel
Minor Boon: Olarune is said to be assoicated with the Dragon House D’Neith, and its Mark of Sentinel. A moonspeaker with this boon reduces damage from mundane sources by one point per die, to a minimum of zero.
Major Boon: Children of Olarune are often said to have an affinity for lycanthropes and shapechangers of all kinds. A moonspeaker with this boon gains any Shifter proficiency as a bonus proficiency.
Supreme Boon: Olarune is connected to the plane of Lammania, the Twilight Forest. The forests around his domain tithe are bolstered in vitality and tithe a share to him. If the moonspeaker is the ruler or chaplain of a domain, he can extract additional divine power from the wild growth there. Each week, each hex of forested terrain in the domain provides him with divine power equal to 10% of its land revenue. The amount extracted from this ability is in addition to any the moonspeaker derived from his personal congregation and domain congregation. Extracting the divine power requires one day of dedicated activity by the character each week.
Rhaan, the Book
Minor Boon: Rhaan is connected to plane of Thelanis, the Faerie Court. The moonspeaker with this boon gains a +2 bonus on reaction rolls with faeries, nymphs, and natives of Thelanis. Additionally, when he casts enchantment spells, the effects are calculated as if his caster level were two higher than his actual level, and any targets suffer a -2 penalty to their saving throws. His eligibility to research enchantment magic is determined as if he were two caster levels higher than actual. He gains a +2 bonus on magic research throws and increases his research rate by 10% when researching enchantment magic. This boon can partially stack with Mastery of Enchantments and Illusions, increasing his effective caster level by three (rather than two) and increasing the saving throw penalty to -3 when casting enchantment spells and granting a +3 bonus to magic research throws and increasing his research rate by a total of 15% when researching enchantment magic.
Major Boon: Rhaan is said to be associated with the Dragon House of Sivis, and its Mark of Scribing. The character with this boon can decipher text (including ciphers, treasure maps, and dead languages, but not magical writings). Deciphering a page of text requires one turn (10 minutes) and a successful proficiency throw of 4+. If the roll does not succeed, the moonspeaker cannot try to decipher that particular page of text until he reaches a higher level of experience.
Supreme Boon: Children of Rhaan are said to be drawn to the creative arts. The character with this boon gains a +1 bonus to magic research throws, and an additional +1 bonus when experimenting. If he suffers a mishap while experimenting, he can roll twice for the mishap and suffer whichever result he chooses.
Sypheros, the Shadow
Minor Boon: Children of Sypheros are said to be at home in the shadows. Opponents suffer a -2 penalty to surprise rolls when encountering the character with this boon approaching from outside line of sight or lying in wait in cover or darkness.
Major Boon: Sypheros is said to be associated with the Dragon House of Phiarlan and its Mark of Shadow. The character with this boon may cast summon shadow once per week. He need not have the spell in their repertoire nor expend a spell slot.
Supreme Boon: Sypheros is connected to the plane of Mabar, the Endless Night. The character with this boon can perform necromancy at half the usual cost.
Therendor, the Healer’s Moon
Minor Boon: Children of Therendor are said to be adept at concocting natural remedies. The character with this boon can identify and forage for healing herbs as if he had one rank of Naturalism proficiency. (If he already has Naturalism, she gains a +4 bonus on proficiency throws to identify and forage for healing herbs.) He can use healing herbs as if he had Healing proficiency. Given one turn (10 minutes), he can combine a pound of healing herbs with an equal gp of special components to create potent healing herbs that increase their effect by +1. The moonspeaker needs a cauldron over a fire or a kitchen to make potent healing herbs. The potent herbs lose all efficacy after 24 hours.
Major Boon: Therendor is connected to the plane of Syriana, the Azure Sky. The character with this boon can cast winged flight once per day. He need not have the spell in their repertoire nor expend a spell slot.
Supreme Boon: Therendor is said to be associated with the lost Dragon House of Jorasco, and their Mark of Healing. The moonspeaker with this boon can ameliorate the suffering of broken souls. By praying over a living recipient for 1 turn, the character can remove one side effect from tampering with mortality. Such a boon does not come without a cost, however: The recipient is immediately subjected to a quest. The nature of the quest is chosen by the Judge, not the moonspeaker. The moonspeaker can ameliorate suffering once per month, and no creature can benefit from his amelioration more than once in its lifetime.
Vult, the Warding Moon
Minor Boon: Vult is connected to the plane of Shavarth, the Eternal Battleground. The moonspeaker with this boon is prepared for constant struggle, and gains a +1 bonus to all initiative rolls.
Major Boon: Children of Vult are said to be adept at planning ahead, preparing for crises, and seeing far. The character with this boon increases their maximum repertoire size by one for each level of spell they know. This ability stacks with the Expanded Repertoire proficiency, if any.
Supreme Boon: Vult is said to be associated with the Dragon House of Kundarak, and its Mark of Warding. The character with this boon is secure in his sanctum. The sanctum and all creatures within are subject to indiscernibility. Each of its doors and portals opens only for those who know the password, as with magic lock. The character must spend one dedicated activity per week to maintain this defense.
Zarantyr, the Storm Moon
Minor Boon: Children of Zarantyr are said to have wild and tempestuous personalities. The moonspeaker who select this boon gain their choice of Berserkergang or Combat Ferocity as a bonus proficiency.
Major Boon: Zarantyr is connected to the plane of Kythri, the Churning Chaos, where nothing keeps its form for long. The character with this boon may cast skinchange once per day. He need not have the spell in their repertoire nor expend a spell slot.
Supreme Boon: Zarantyr is said to be connected to the Dragon House of Lyrandar, and its Mark of Storm. The character learns to control the rains, ward off unseasonal frosts, and temper harsh winds. By expending an ancillary activity each day, the character can control the weather in the region around his stronghold for the next 24 hours. If the character is the ruler or chaplain of a domain, his region of control encompasses the entire domain’s territory, up to a maximum of 16 6-mile hexes. If the character is not a domain ruler or chaplain, his region of control encompasses the 3-mile radius around his stronghold (one 6-mile hex). Within his region of control, the character can set the temperature, precipitation, and wind to any desired value within its natural limits, as the spell summon weather. If the character controls the weather in his region for at least 21 days in any given month, he can adjust the land value of the hexes in his region by 1gp for the following month.
