The market quarter of Vedycaer, a grid of arcades and piazzas in the city’s southwest. Its plazas are specialized marketplaces — one for cloth, one for pottery, one for fish — that draw off the crush that would otherwise swamp the Emporium, and between them stand the great monuments to Sair’s victory. The Imperial Walls close it off to the west and south; the Street of Wolves and the Street of Roses mark its border with the Festival District to the northeast. See Vedycaer Districts for the other seven.

Headings are numbered to the map.

39. The Obelisk of Heroes

The district’s proudest landmark: a towering obelisk cut from a single enormous block of red granite, carved with images of the four heroes of Numilvara. Around its base stand great angled stones inscribed with the names of the Sairan soldiers who fell taking the city.

40. The Colonnade of Triumph

A grand triumphal colonnade raised centuries ago to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the city’s annexation into the Empire. Processions still pass beneath it on victory days.

42. The Courtyard of Nine Shrines

A small, quiet plaza given over to the nine shrines of the old Sovereigns — the faiths that Sair tolerates alongside the worship of Numilvara. Their followers keep the courtyard and gather here for the old rites.

44. The Fish Market

The busiest of the district’s specialized markets, and the place the city’s catch comes to be sold — loud, wet, and pungent from dawn, and largely done by midday.

Around the district

  • 38. The Warehouse Block — bulk storage for the goods that move through the plazas.
  • 45. The Public Latrine — a public facility serving the market crowds.

Gates

  • 37. The West Gate — the gate through the Imperial Walls on the western side, open sunup to sundown.
  • 43. The Plaza Gate — the southern gate through the Imperial Walls, open sunup to sundown.
