Teryk is a border fort and attached village in the north of Sair, ruled by Count Roland Varnel. Since the borderlands legions were called south two years ago, the garrison has run thin — desertion has become a real problem, and the Count has little strength to spare beyond his walls.

Fenrath’s Fire Brigade came here to deliver the deserter Peleos (Session 16) and have used the town as a base for expeditions toward the Hole in the Oak.

Beyond the fort proper sit the usual comforts of a garrison town — a bathhouse and the Traveler’s Inn, where everyone from soldiers to spies eventually turns up.

The garrison and court

Count Roland Varnel

Master of the fort, who hears petitioners at his villa. A professional soldier of a junior branch of the great Varnel house, he takes his responsibilities seriously and strives to keep peace and security in a county the Empire has left short-handed. In private, he broods on the decay of the Empire.

Contessa Selenia Varnel

The Count’s wife, who presides over the villa’s dinner table. Classically educated in Metrol, she delights in the Empire’s great writers and philosophers, and warms to guests who can talk literature and philosophy with her.

Captain Axios Ilarion

A grizzled, devout soldier who drills what troops remain at the headquarters and parade ground. He has a deep reverence for the clergy and urges every expedition to seek the blessing of the gods before setting out.

Attendant Garalen

An aging, white-mantled healer of Talavosh who runs the fort hospital, tending soldier and civilian alike. The party owes him for curing their enervation (Session 17).

Annalist Hometri Socolo

The Imperial annalist and keeper of the Historical archives, which Count Roland has opened freely to the party. He can identify common magic items, decipher scrolls, and interpret old carvings and frescoes.

Quartermaster Koinos Thales

Overseer of the commissary and stables — a sharp mind behind an oafish face. Off-duty he is a formidable player of Kyrpeges, the Sairan wargame, and will happily play strangers for coin at the inn.

Aeropos Karanos

The Merchant Guildmaster, who keeps a table at the forum offering secure storage, loans, and money-changing, and contracts for consigned cargo toward Bastion or Vedycaer. Teryk is a Class V market.

Other notables

Arven the Amazing

The Count’s court magist, a broad-shouldered astrologer and enchanter who dislikes being interrupted at his studies (he identified the Sword of Beguiling).

Casino

A retired construct adventurer, good with maps, whose speech sometimes slips into garbled noise. He runs the local (nonlethal) fighting ring, where Vezhka earned the name “One-Punch” (Session 16).

Lieutenant Nerra Valek

A formidable young officer, strong and lithe, with a great head for tactics.

Corvin Hale

A village watchman who owes Fenmyra a good turn after she pointed him after a fleeing thief (Session 16).
